What are your techniques for the teaching of vocabulary meaning?

There are a number of techniques which could be used for the teaching of meaning:
- A physical demonstration, using mime and gesture, may be the most effective as it will create a visual memory for a word.
- A verbal explanation, involving a number of contexts, will lead learners towards meaning.
- A synonym has the advantage of making learners aware of paradigmatic relations in the language and that a range of words exists from which a choice can be made.
Other possible techniques are translation (NOT CLT), pointing to objects, using visual aids, using antonyms, or asking learners to check in a dictionary (NOT CLT)!
