The reason why Thai people are afraid of speaking English is that they are often made fun of.
They are afraid that they are shy to do the mistakes. Actually, the best way to practice English is to use it.
No need to be shy when you do a mistake, that is a good beginning of being professional!

For me, I think people afraid that they might pronounce words incorrectly or the accent.
Me too, even that I am English major student but I often pronounce words wrong and that made me not confident when I'm speaking.

I think the main reason is that people are so shy to speak out. They don't have confidence to pronounce.
Another reason is grammar. Thai people focus on grammar too much.
So, when people have to speak English with foreigners or in public, they will worry about grammar.
They will be afraid that others will correct them.

Personally, I think they are afriad of doing mistakes and sometimes they will be judge by someone who want to tell they are wrong and they do a mistake. Even me, sometimes I was shy to speak English in the public because I'm afraid to be judge in negative way.
