Why are many Thai people afraid of speaking English?

I think there were not enough situations for us to use it.
so, we are shy when meeting foreigners.
Moreover, I think we have not enough confidence to practice communicating with foreigners.

I have to let you know that I do not really know why most of Thais are scared of communicating in English! Some may argue that English is hard and tiring! However, I have a strong feeling that English is a piece of cake, and it is very intriguing! Once I speak English, I often think that it is not my native tongue, so it is not our job to feel shy when we make grammatical mistakes! I always think that if the messages sent are understood, the communication is already successful!

There are so many reasons. I don't have all the answers, but I think that Thai people will continue to put in a very small amount of effort as long as they don't see any real need to learn English.

I think it is because they are afraid of some people that always criticize the accent of Thai people.
They may feel uncomfortable with some awkward situations for them to use English.
Sometimes, that might be the result of the school that always teaches only about grammar.
So, they don't really know how to use English when they want to speak.

In my opinion, Thai people always concern about their accents. I have seen people who laughing at a person who try to speak English, that was the way to decrease self-confidence and make people do not dare to speak English as well. In high school, I noticed my friends are always laughing while another try to speak English. This situation always happened to me since I was grade 10 to grade 12.

In my opinion, Thai people afraid to speaking English because they worried about their accent and grammar. Thai people learned English since their was child. But they learned about grammar more than speaking. So, in the real life, it hard to use the English that we have learned because in real life is not the same with classroom.

I think because Thai students learn about the grammar first and they are too strict about it when they speak. They will worry about the grammar if they speak it wrong. And maybe they are insulted by others. It will make them less confidence.

Most of the answers I received when I worked was they are afraid of making mistakes.
Thai people care too much about the accents, grammar and likely to recite tons of vocabulary but don't know how to use it in real life situation.
At the result, they become lack of confidence and end up not speaking English at all.

In my view, Teaching in Thailand mainly to surf the terminology to be used over the use of everyday waste. Some people still do not know the terminology about vegetables - fruits called anything but to know about science vocabulary over another. For this reason , most people make Thailand did not dare to speak English because they think they know English , but who really knows what does not apply.

But in my opinion I think it’s because in Thai society, Thai teachers always complain a lot about gramma and accent when student try to speak English. So many people always avoid to speak English.
